About earwigs
An adult earwig is dark brown or black and has a pair of pincers (forceps) on its abdomen. They are flattened and have two short, leathery wings. They are about 1/2 inch long. Nymphs (young earwigs) look like adults but are smaller and don’t have wings. The European earwig is the most common type found in North America. It is believed to have been introduced in Europe in the early 1900s.
Earwigs are most active in the spring and fall but can be found year-round in some areas. They like to hide in dark, moist places during the day and come out at night to feed on various pests. The pincers on earwigs are used for defense, not for biting. They can pinch if they feel threatened, but it is not a harmful bite.
