About earwigs

An adult earwig is dark brown or black and has a pair of pincers (forceps) on its abdomen. They are flattened and have two short, leathery wings. They are about 1/2 inch long. Nymphs (young earwigs) look like adults but are smaller and don’t have wings. The European earwig is the most common type found in North America. It is believed to have been introduced in Europe in the early 1900s.

Earwigs are most active in the spring and fall but can be found year-round in some areas. They like to hide in dark, moist places during the day and come out at night to feed on various pests. The pincers on earwigs are used for defense, not for biting. They can pinch if they feel threatened, but it is not a harmful bite.

Why and how have earwigs invaded my property?

Earwigs would much rather live outside. However, as the summer heats up and dries things out, earwigs venture inside looking for moisture. They can enter through the smallest of gaps and openings around your home or business.

When do earwigs become active?

Earwigs are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. In the Phoenix Valley, these pests most often begin moving inside during the hot summer months when they are searching for moisture.

Are Earwigs Dangerous?

Earwigs are not dangerous, despite their menacing appearance. They prefer to eat bugs, however, when bugs become scarce, they can turn to other plants within your landscaping or gardens. Indoors, they are simply searching for moisture.

How can I prevent future earwig issues?

Earwigs can enter your home through the smallest of gaps and cracks around your foundation or in doorways. The best way to prevent earwig infestation is to identify and seal these openings. This is a critical part of the pest management offered by our team.
